April showers bring new Cabernet’s and the first night of Passover falls on April 19, 2008.
Pelican Wine has brought in some new wines from
California that is beautiful Cabernet’s. These wines are from the
Spring Mountain District, Stage Leap District, and Diamond Mountain
District around Napa Valley California
The
first wine Fantesca ($65-73) Estate and Winery, 2003 Cabernet
Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain district (only 850 cases).
This estate grown 100% Cabernet shows finesse and rich style that
hallmarks Spring Mountain District. The wine was aged in French Oak
barrels for 19 month’s with an alcohol level of 14.2%. Fantesca
carries notes of spice and berries; the body is rich, supple, and
complex. On the palate the wine is well balanced, soft, well
integrated tannins perfectly matched to the fruit levels. This wine
will age for decades or you can decant it and enjoy now. At
Fantesca Estate & Winery, renowned terroir and artisan winemaking
combine to produce wines of character and refinement that pair well
with food and friends. Fantesca Estate is 10 acres of boutique winery
located in Napa just a mile above St. Helena
The
next wine is Hartwell Vineyards 2003 Misté
Hill Cabernet Sauvignon ($65-70), Stags Leap District (only 1460
cases). Hartwell locatedon the Silverado Trial in Napa Valley. Misté
Hill is a unique blend produced from Stags Leap District estate grown
grapes aged 20 month’s in French Oak. The name is a tribute to our
property, which on many late summer mornings is enveloped in a low
misty fog that creeps in from San Francisco Bay. These conditions
make for grapes with great intensity of color and flavor, and for
soft tannins. The 2003 Misté Hill is a classically structured wine,
with deep, ripe blackberry notes layered with hints of forest floor,
exotic spices, sandalwood, and licorice. This Cabernet Sauvignon
ripened beautifully in 2003, providing the lush berry fruit that
serves as the base of this wine. Cabernet 77%, 21% Merlot, and 2%
Petit Verdot grounds the wine, adding depth and structure, as well as
layers of complexity and interest. This wine is crafted to be enjoyed
in its youth, but should continue to soften and gain complexity for
the next five.
The next wine is Diamond Terrace 2004 Cabernet
Sauvignon ($60-65) from Napa Valley’s Diamond Mountain District.
14.1% alcohol level. (Only 275 cases). The steeply terraced 5-acre
vineyard was planted in 1988 to Cabernet Sauvignon. More vines
were added in 1992 to the insides of the terraces. In 1999 we
began producing a limited quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon from the
unique Diamond Mountain District.
The
2004 Diamond Mountain Cabernet possesses a dark ruby color with an
exotically perfumed nose of violets, blackberries, smoke and
licorice. The wine’s palate has rounded out considerably since
its summer 2006 bottling revealing notes of crushed rocks, cassis,
graphite, tar and black raspberries. The finish has turned long
and sweet with time in the bottle. Like any concentrated
hillside wine, patience in the cellar or many hours in a
decanter will reveal a more evolved wine. 2004 drinks well now
and should continue to improve for 5-10 years.
